Police Call Out Van Driver for ‘Unbelievably Inconsiderate’ Parking

Police Urge Drivers to Park Responsibly After Shocking Van Obstruction in Bury

Motorists are being urged to park responsibly after police discovered a van blocking a pavement, a shop entrance, and a pedestrian crossing in Bury. The incident, which has sparked frustration among locals, has been described as one of the most inconsiderate parking offences witnessed by officers.

A Startling Display of Inconsiderate Parking

Greater Manchester Police (GMP) shared an image of the offending vehicle—a Mercedes van—wedged between a row of shops and footpath railings on Walmersley Road. Officers promptly issued a traffic offence report, instructing the driver to relocate the vehicle.

In a Facebook statement, GMP’s town centre neighbourhood team highlighted their ongoing efforts to tackle traffic violations across Bury:

"The town centre neighbourhood team have been focusing on traffic offences being committed by road users around the town centre and outskirts today. We have engaged with and stopped multiple drivers, with some receiving tickets for their actions."

Regarding the van in question, the force added:

"Not only was it obstructing the footpath entirely, but it was also parked within the limits of a pedestrian crossing. The driver was issued a ticket and instructed to move the van."

The Dangers of Reckless Parking

Police emphasised the importance of adhering to parking regulations, particularly around pedestrian crossings, stating:

"The white zig-zag lines at pedestrian crossings are there to ensure no one parks in a manner that limits visibility for pedestrians. Such obstructions pose a serious safety risk."

Local Frustration Over Parking Issues

The incident has ignited debate among locals, with many asserting that inconsiderate parking is a persistent problem in the area. Manchester Evening News even dubbed it "the most inconsiderate parking job Greater Manchester has ever seen."

Residents took to social media to voice their frustrations:

  • One person commented: "Hate driving up that road. I avoid it as much as I can."
  • Another branded the driver’s actions as "selfish," while someone else remarked, "See it every day in Ladybarn."
  • A different resident lamented: "It’s the norm."

Calls for Stricter Penalties

Many locals believe harsher penalties are necessary to deter irresponsible parking. One commenter suggested:

"If you block the entire pavement, you should get a fine. Nobody should have to walk on the road because vehicles have parked on the pavement."

The issue of pavement parking remains a contentious one across the UK, with campaigners calling for increased enforcement and more severe penalties for offenders.

Reporting Inconsiderate Parking

According to police guidance, instances of inconsiderate parking should be reported to the local council, which has the authority to take enforcement action. However, specific violations—such as parking on zig-zag lines, creating a hazard, or obstructing emergency vehicle access—should be reported directly to the police via the non-emergency 101 number or through their online reporting system.

This latest incident in Bury underscores the need for greater awareness and stricter enforcement of parking regulations. Drivers are reminded to be mindful of where they park, not only to avoid fines but also to ensure the safety and accessibility of public spaces for pedestrians. Responsible parking is not just a legal obligation—it’s a matter of public safety and common courtesy.
