Visitors to six car parks in Basildon Borough will be able to park for free over the festive period, following a decision by Basildon Borough Council to remove parking charges. The initiative aims to support local shopping and ensure that both residents and visitors can enjoy the holiday season without worrying about parking fees.
The free parking offer will run from 20 December to 5 January, covering the following car parks: High Street, Radford Crescent, and Lake Meadows in Billericay; Wickford Main, Ladygate Shopping Centre, and Wickford Swimming Pool in Wickford. The decision to waive parking charges is part of an ongoing effort to encourage people to shop locally and support businesses in Billericay and Wickford.
This move follows similar actions taken by other local councils, including Epping Forest District Council, Maldon District Council, and Southend-on-Sea City Council. The initiative has been praised by local businesses, including Paul Edwards, owner of Geek Garage in Wickford High Street, who expressed his gratitude: “Thank you to the council for offering free parking this Christmas season! It’s a fantastic way to support local businesses and make shopping more convenient for everyone. We’re excited to welcome more customers into our store this festive season and are grateful for this initiative that helps our community thrive.”
Councillor Aidan McGurran (Lab.) commented, “This festive season, we want to make it easier for residents and visitors to pick up last-minute gifts, enjoy the winter sales, and experience all that our vibrant towns have to offer. This is about giving back to our residents, supporting our local economy, and celebrating our local businesses.”
